"In a story set deep in the wild winter wood, two hungry ravens fly in search of their next meal. A pack of wolves is on the hunt, too. Food is scarce, but, if they team up, the ravens and wolves just might be able to help each other. The ravens follow a pack of starving wolves on the hunt. The wolves come up empty handed and even lose one of their own in the chase but the ravens have better luck. The wolves hear the ravens cawing and investigate only to find an injured deer, the perfect meal! The wolves make the kill; the opportunistic ravens benefit, feasting alongside and after the wolves."--Provided by publisher.

Read this to 5 year old but only because I knew he was ready for it.
It deals with reality as he was very curious about prey and how it works in the wild and this book deals with it simply and shows why it is like that ending with the needs of the family/cycle and how there's survival of the fittest. My son asked questions and reasoned why they all couldn't live or why the fox couldn't have jumped differently and avoided the outcome and I explained and talked with him. He was happy with the story and still asked to read it again.
I think it is done really well for a child story and isn't done too graphically or with too much gore or the likes.
It's nice to have real options for kids who are ready and parents comfortable with it.

This picture book is based on the interaction of different species (ravens, wolves, and their prey), and is recommended for older children due to the death of one of the wolves and their prey (a deer). However, it is informative about the ecological relationships between species and could provide an introduction to this topic. The artwork is also striking, with bold lines.
