The genius of this novel is that although the protagonists are quite despicable characters, you end up sympathising with them somehow and what appears to be a straightforward tale of a love triangle unravels as a complex, compelling and suspenseful story. Beautifully written with seemingly effortless style, pace and control, it is one of those books that stays with you. I'm now going to read Winston Graham's entire back catalogue after the chance discovery of this little gem.
