After being held in a camp during the war, Brenda Stuart returns to her late husband's stately home in the Pennines, to be reunited with her young son. A factory-worker's daughter from Manchester, Brenda doesn't belong in such wealthy surroundings - which her father-in-law never lets her forget. Her baby boy is nowhere to be seen. Brenda's only ally is Prue, her beloved sister-in-law who has problems of her own. She has fallen in love with an Italian POW who works on the family estate. Pulling together to work on the land, the two friends try to find happiness, love and Brenda's long lost son.
