Stig is contesting the annual Maktig competition to decide Skandia's greatest warrior. But an unexpected visitor arrives with a request Stig, Hal and the brotherband can't refuse- a rescue mission of epic proportions. Pirates have kidnapped the son of the Empress of Byzantos, a city-state far to the south. The brotherband sets sail to recover the boy, only to find that the pirates' fortress seems impenetrable, sitting atop towering cliffs above the deep lagoon - the caldera - of a volcanic crater. Culminating in a battle for survival on the high seas, The Caldera sees the Herons take on one of their most difficult missions yet as the fate of an empire rests on their shoulders.

Once again, John Flanagan has written a taut adventure tale in which the Heron Brotherband embarks on a rescue mission fraught with danger and battles with pirates. Stig’s estranged father, who appears after a long absence, is the catalyst for this escapade. Stig yearns to understand his father’s previous actions and motivations. I appreciated that the father-son relationship was not tidily wrapped up.

John Flanagan’s The Caldera - Brotherband Chronicles - Book 7 was an excellent book. My 21st Flanagan book. This book is highly recommended by Doctor-at-Bass. Taylor A.

I always love tagging along with the Herons on their latest adventures, but I do find them growing slightly repetitive. I mean, they're still amazing, but the pattern isn't very altered. It's usually a sneak in, rescue random hostage, barely escape, run into additional difficulty, somehow escape again, and return home to great acclaim. However, the adventures are wonderfully fun to read, and Flanagan writes with a brief, engaging style. Ulf and Wulf are enough by themselves to make the books enjoyable. Yes, I liked it, but I could have liked it more with an altered plot.
