THE story of 12-year-old Xan (Alexander Michaletos), who decides to return the cheetah he raised from a cub to the wild instead of allowing pursuers to place it in captivity. Harsh South African landscapes, stalking lions, crocodiles, river rapids and a mysterious drifter (Eamonn Walker) who may intend to turn the big cat in for cash - all will test Xan's courage and resolve. Join him in this tale of growing up and letting go.

A boy and his dad find a baby cheeta which they raise and then must release. The father dies before they are able to do so and the young boy undertakes a the trek to return the cheetah, Duma, to the wild home from which he came.
This film stars the fantastic desert scenery of south Africa; Alexander Michaletos as the young lad who undertakes the mission; Aemon Walker as the enigmatic drifter who is a once ominous and at other times endearing; top billing, however, goes to Duma the cheetah.
Not just another Bambi story. This cheetah is the engagingly real McCoy.
Not just for kids.

An absolute heartwarming adventure!

Duma is such a beautiful family movie that should not be missed. Kids could learn so much from this adventure story of a boy and a cheetah. Great directing by Carroll Ballard, who also directed two of my favourite movies about the bond between humans and animals, Never Cry Wolf and The Black Stallion.

Director Carroll Ballard does not direct many movies, but when he does you can count on a beautiful movie. Just like so many of Carroll Ballard's movies this is a classic family movie. Your introduced to a cheetah named Duma by a 12 year old boy Xan who finds him all alone. They journey together to get Duma back to his rightful home in the wilds. It will not be a easy journey, but the rewards are many. The cinematography is beautiful, which is something all Carroll Ballard films share. He is a master with a camera. Duma was not a big box office hit, so you may never have heard about it. I know I missed this movie when it came out. It wasn't a box office hit and soon disappeared. If I wasn't a follower of Carroll Ballard films, I might never have seen this little gem. I hope you enjoy it and please let me know here at the KCLS website your reaction to the film.

It seemed unrealistic to me and the accents were hard to follow. Although we don't know what hardships the leopards went through to become trained actors, it is enchanting to see such beautiful creatures.
