Decline and Fall wasn't my favorite period drama, but it kept me reasonably entertained for an evening. The main character, Paul Pennyfeather, is so clueless and gullible for most of the narrative that I wanted to reach into the T.V. and shake some common sense into him. His gullibility was especially laughable and frustrating in regards to the alluring, yet shady, Margot Beste-Chetwynde (played to glamorous perfection by Eva Longoria). This is my second foray into an Evelyn Waugh classic and all the female characters are either conceited, conniving, or just plain horrible. I'm beginning to wonder if Mr. Waugh had some issues with the fairer sex. My favorite character was inept headmaster, Dr. Fagan (played by the marvelous David Suchet). This story is definitely a satire and works deliciously as such.

There is a reason that Evelyn Waugh's comic novels are not popular any more. His plots are unbelievable, and his characters predictable, and very much products of their time and place. This movie hews close to the original novel. It fails to amuse deeply, or even engage the viewer.

Ì rather enjoyed it. I found it to be silly in the best way. Light and fun
Refreshing. I meant to give it 4 stars but it showed 2.5!

A satisfying and delightful rendition of a great novel.
Very entertaining and brilliantly acted.
Satirical, biting humour, with many very comical moments.
Boasts a great cast who have no trouble working with a wonderful script.
Great camera direction.
Made me want to return to read the original work by Evelyn Waugh.

sorry guys, I didnt make it past 30 minutes in. Yawn! and the dumbest premise for a show. I guess Im just a lowbrow but I think I gave it the best of chances.
Im sad to say it, as I a HUGE fan of most British TV and historical fiction and, of course, David Suchet!

Always partial to Evelyn Waugh, and I thought that this was a sincere, in the best of all possible worlds enactment of the author's satire.

I guess I'd call this a farce rather than a comedy. I didn't laugh, but I did see they were trying for humor by making fun of different classes and institutions. It was entertaining, but not wonderful. Some big-name stars help it along.
