The small ranching town of Benton becomes the "Town of Twenty Triggers" when the Joker, a portly, chuckling man with a bland smile, a poker face, and an amazing ability to make a deck of cards perform any trick he desired, and his traveling companion Emmet Pierce, a Texan fast with his gun, arrive determined to take it over. After winning ownership of The Palace, the largest gambling hall in town, the Joker has Pierce hire gunslingers to enforce his hold on the town. Things are going according to the Joker's fiendish plans until Emmet Pierce discovers a conscience. The Pacific Railroad in "Where Hell's Coyotes Howl" wants to build their spur line from Santa Fe to Tucson through Apache Gap, but no one seems to know who owns the land. Face Card Farrow, the strong man in Tucson, is murdered and most of his papers, which could hold the key, are missing. Amid all of this turmoil, Laramie Drake, owner of the Double Deuces Ranch, saves Midge Lawrence from her abusive guardian and reluctantly takes on the job of keeping her safe, a situation complicated when Midge becomes the focus of all the factions because they believe she owns the deed to Apache Gap. "The Teton Bunch" pulled off a daring robbery in 1882. Gordon Hammer, who had carried the money, was captured, but the gold was never found. Having served his time, Hammer is now a small rancher. Everyone, including Sheriff Victor Bondurant, believes Hammer has the money hidden. Matters get worse when former gang members show up, looking for their share.
