I really liked the concept of this book. Unlike a lot of dystopian YA novels, this is not the entire world, but just a quarantined portion impacted by a virus outbreak. While I found the overall resolution of the characters predicament predictable, I enjoyed the fact that 1) the main character was bi-racial and 2) it successfully wove present happenings, flashbacks and the protagonist's visions of his father's comic book heroes into the story. I also liked the parallel universes of the comic book characters and the plight of the story's characters. My only complaints were 1) I thought the beginning and ending of the book was compelling and fast but the middle was basically a walkabout of self discovery for the protagonist that dragged the pace down and 2) I felt like there were unresolved details surrounding the key that Hannah wore around her neck and even notes left behind by previous selves that were not revealed. Why introduce those details? That said, I think these were not detrimental to the overall story. I give it a sold three stars.

When the virus hit most of the people in town lost their memories. Some died in the ensuing chaos. Others found some solace in relationships they could no longer remember. Others are starting anew. But what about Cardinal? He was uninfected and he can remember. He cannot, however, interact too closely for fear of infection. Are some memories better forgotten?
