This is a story about a magic sword (or THE magic sword), its chosen wielder, and a god's cosmic struggle against entropy. This is also the story of three generations of family, the suffering and heartbreak of Alzheimer's-related memory loss, and how family comes together and falls apart during times of crisis.

I love stories that use fantasy to explore raw, everyday, down-to-earth themes. Cates is a master of using the fantastic to draw characters' unseen emotions and relationships to the surface, forcing their inner worlds to the urgent, actionable present. The cosmic and the familial become mirrors of one-another, Emmett Quinlan's struggle against Alzheimer's inseparable from the fight against entropy itself.

A beautifully styled, haunting story of father-son relationships, familial commitment and love.

A fantastic read that punches you right in the feels. Not just a story about an old man with a magic sword. It's about family and everything that goes with that when times are tough.
