I can't say that I wasn't warned. Any movie that wins the Academy awards for best picture and best director is bound to be a sack of twee twaddle.

Is this thing anything more than a fairy tale for 10 year olds, gussied up with the required violence, sex and language that it needs to get an "adult" rating?

A concise description would be "Maudie meets the Creature from the Black Lagoon."

I loved this movie! As usual, Sally Hawkins gave a powerful performance. I like her style; she's quirky and unusual. I had a general idea of what the story was about, but I was pleasantly surprised with its beauty and the beast touches. At first I thought the dance sequence was ridiculous, but after I stopped laughing, I was thoroughly enchanted. A great movie for romantic hearts, especially if you prefer beauty and the beast themes where the beast doesn't transform.

This is a love story between two different worlds, and an ode to Cinema. I would recommend to see Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) to have an idea, then watch this one since The Shape of the Water is based on that 1954 original version.

I liked the cinematography but I was bored, overall. I'm usually bored, for the record. I probably finish only one movie in 12. I tend to hate artsy films with foliage all over the box, which normally are used to hide boring movies. Think The Motorcycle Diaries, which was like a root canal w/o modern narcotics. I've had 3 bikes, it should have been fun.

I like Richard Jenkins way more in The Visitor.

The film is well presented & lit in a detailed homage to 50's era films. The didactic conclusions from the film are obvious, clearly separating the "good" & "bad" characters through physical interaction & dialogue featuring egregious examples of overt racism, sexism & gender discrimination. The problem is that the "bad" guy Richard Strickland is over the top bad, including not seeking medical help for gangrene & at that point they jumped the shark with this character.

Set in 1960's America, Elisa, who is mute, works as a cleaning lady in the high-security government lab that is keeping a mysterious, scaled creature. Upon discovering the creature, the two develop a "bond." The story is an otherworldly fairy tale of romance...odd but enjoyable.

Look, it's not terrible. But honestly, I felt like it was just boring and unnecessary. It had some great moments and it really seemed interesting at first, but I can't really see why this movie won "Best Picture". The sex and masturbation scenes are...fine, but they weren't really necessary. And maybe it was just me, but I didn't really feel like they fell in love. They went from eating eggs and hanging out to let's have sex now. It just didn't feel deep enough. I didn't care enough about the characters. (And believe me, I went into this with an open mind.) (It was a bit overrated, to be honest.)

If people enjoy this movie, good to them. I hope people can find enjoyment in this. In my own opinion, it was boring and paced terribly. The characters were boring and bland except for Zelda and Giles. I don't really recommend this movie based on any personal enjoyment, but I would still say to watch the movie and form your own opinion on it!

Well, that was a pleasant surprise! A modern day Fairytale, of the mute princess and her Prince Charming! Just keep an open mind- and you’ll be captivated by the magic!

P/S Micheal Shannon stole the show!!!! Damn that man can act his “arse” off! lol

Very similar tale to the old movie: "SPLASH". This Starred Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah in the 80's which was re-invented here. Similar in theme, genre, water back- drop and love story/RESCUE idea. Overall it was okay, instead of using a 'Mermaid', they switched it with a 'Merman' or Man-fish without the tail and with webbed feet ideal. You can think of it as a slightly, skewed, 'Copy-cat', movie version of 'Splash', which was different for an 80's flick. Thx.

Like other viewers, I had been put off this movie by verbal reviews, the most common of which was "weird". Well yes, it is very different, but I thought it was pretty special actually. Beautiful cinematography and a love story which although unlikely, still fueled my imagination. I will watch it again in the future and have now got myself on the waiting list to read the book!

54 quotes in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors.) However, some of the best quotes are silent signs. You just have to watch them, like this one:

Zelda: [Elisa looks noticeably happier] Why you smilin', hon? Well stop lookin' like that. What happened?

[Elisa shakes her head to say "nothing"]

Zelda: Why? How? How? Does he - have a...?

[Elisa nods and uses her hands to describe what the Amphibian Man's penis looks like]

Zelda: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Zelda: Lor'...! Never trust a man. Even when he looks flat down there.

"A man has the decency not to fuck up. Now that's one thing, that's real decent of him.

"But the other kind of decency, it doesn't really matter. We sell it, but it's an export. We sell it because we don't use it."

-Character of General Hoyt
