Verne Hallam is heading for Oregon on the Overland Trail when, near Boise City, Idaho, he interrupts a holdup of the Overland Stage. Among the rescued passengers are Nan Stanley, en route to Boise City where her two brothers plan to start a cattle spread, and Lois Lindsay, a wealthy young widow who is about to marry a mining engineer named Wade Canby. Attracted by the two women and knowing that the sheriff will want to talk to him about the outlaws, the young cowboy agrees to postpone his journey to Oregon. Which he soon learns is not very smart because the holdup gang is out to get him. He makes more trouble for himself by trying to find out exactly what Wade Canby's connection with the outlaws is. Before these curiously intertwined mysteries are solved, one man is kidnaped, young Hallam twice is nearly murdered, and some others are not that lucky.
