When prison inmate and former police officer John Brace says he's willing to give up information about a long-dead wheeler dealer in return for protection for his family, Vera knows that she has to look into his claims. But opening up this cold case strikes much closer to home than Vera anticipates as her investigation takes her back in time to The Seagull, a once decadent and now derelict nightclub where her deceased father and his friends used to congregate. As Vera's past collides dangerously with the present, she will have to confront her unwanted memories and face the possibility that her father was involved in what happened. The truth is about to come out - but is Vera ready for what it will reveal?

Sandwiched between 400 pages is the discovery of 2 bodies at the beginning of the novel, then a lot of investigations are described all ending in few results, but, finally, close to the end, a breakthrough occurs so that the murders can be solved. Sound familiar? I admit that I got tired of following Vera and her detective team around the countryside pursuing possible leads, checking stories, finding out details about events in the past, discovering facts about the lives of their suspects, and linking new clues to possible motives. It took Cleeves too long to reveal the necessary clues that helped Vera solve this murder mystery.

I'll read anything and everything Ann Cleeves produces. Wonderful writer. But she really needs to come up with more satisfactory endings.

More is revealed about the inimitable Vera Stanhope's father and his shady dealings in The Seagull.Secrets and murders abound . The mystery emanates from The Seagull, a trendy night club on the shoreline, missing girls and unidentified remains. Excellent and will make riveting TV.
