I am just wild about Mies van Hout's electric oil pastel and ink illustrations of two monsters navigating their way through friendship with just a single word per page. The exuberant, neon colors just sizzle on the stark black background and it begs to have a storytime craft program after reading this to your favorite monsters. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. *Miss Kitty's reviews focus primarily on illustration*

Vivid colors on a black background make these pastel drawings pop off the page. This nearly wordless picture book features monster friends who play and quarrel and make up again, but most of all, they inspire us to break out our art supplies and get to work on our own creations. This is also a great book to encourage young kids to talk about friendships and emotions.

Bright, scratchy pastels of pairs of monsters against black backgrounds are accompanied by single words like embarass and trust in Mies van Hout's wonderful Friends. As a parent said to me after I read it aloud with her daughter, it's the kind of book that makes kids want to immediately go draw.
