After Adeline's mother died, her affluent father remarried a French-Chinese teenager, Niang, and the family moved to Shanghai where they lived in a large house in the middle of the French Concession. During this time, the 1930s, when everything western in treaty ports such as Shanghai was deemed superior to anything Chinese, Niang was the ultimate status symbol and Adeline's father was besotted.

I definitely learned about Communist China. I also learned that my culture is so different from the author's that it becomes tedious to read about a successful physician who remains sickeningly loyal to a family that detests and abuses her. The concept of "disowning" a family member is foreign, AND the obsession with wills and inheritances.
I don't get it.

Reading this book, I learned a lot about Chinese history and culture. Though I don't often read memoirs, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was fast paced, descriptive in the right places and especially interesting. I would recommend it for sure.
