When Charlotte Perkins enters the 'Become a Jetsetter' contest, she dreams of reuniting her estranged children: Lee, an almost-famous actress; Cord, a handsome Manhattan venture capitalist; and Regan, a harried mother who has never got over Charlotte's gift of a Weight Watchers voucher for her birthday. But when she wins that once in a lifetime trip, all doesn't exactly go to plan... As long-buried secrets are revealed, and lovers new and old appear, can these four lost adults find their way back to each other? And more importantly, can they do it without killing each other? A hilarious and deliciously sun-scented novel about the courage it takes to reveal our true selves and the pleasures and perils of family.

How do people find these quirky, addictive books? The kind of book where you lose yourself, you can’t stop reading, you completely live in these characters and their situation and can’t get them out of your head for days?

I found this one after accidentally hitting upon Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (no idea why that one found me - first-time fiction by women is my jam lately). It was on Reese Witherspoon’s book club list and the only one that looked good to me, but also looked kind of stupid, to be honest. I started assuming I’d just skip it after my “give it a chance” first fifty pages, but by that time I was delighted by everything about this book. The format is perfect for my summer attention span, the characters are adorable without being stupid, the plot is just right for something I don’t want to think too hard about, and it just went by way too quickly.

Since it’s not deep and not going to change your life, just enjoy the few hours you have with these characters and then, later, when you are doing something else, you’ll think back and think about your own family, your own experiences, and laugh and laugh. You don’t get to choose your family but you can choose how you deal with them. And the way these characters interact will give you joy and maybe some ideas.

I was really disappointed with this one. I kept wondering when the story would get better and then it ended.

I had a really hard time getting into this one. Great writer, just not my style, I guess.

This book might appeal to you if you liked The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney. It is a heavier story than the playful cover would suggest. It's worth reading as long as you aren't expecting a light beach read, which it's not.

The Jetsetters by Amanda Eyre Ward

Its about a relatively estranged family who wins a cruise and are forced to spend time together. Don't let the cover fool you, its not a beach read, but supposed to be a heavy drama with bouts of sadness. The writing is lacking and leaves something to be desired though.

This was a book about a really dysfunctional family that had the opportunity to tackle some very large problems, however, nothing ever when below surface level. Eventually it came to light why each individual had their own problems but no one really addressed on another about them. The characters did not grow as a family and hardly grew individually.

Felt like a waste of my time.

Reese Witherspoon's book club pick for March 2020.

Looking for a family more dysfunctional than yours now that the holidays are over? Just finished THE JETSETTERS, and I think readers who enjoy watching broken families try to mend, with lots of humor in the process, will inhale in one sitting.
