A biography of Hongi Hika of Ngapuhi, the foremost leader during the early years of European settlement in New Zealand. The book covers his genealogy, involvement in the early wars (pre 1820), the first encounters with Europeans, his befriending of missionaries such as Samuel Marsden, his visit to the English court in London, and his leadership of Ngapuhi raids during the Musket Wars. Author Dorothy Urlich Cloher, also of Ngapuhi, helped establish the James Henare Maori Research Centre at Auckland University and was its director from 1995-99.
