Christmas crept into Pine Cove like a creeping Christmas thing: dragging garland, ribbon, and sleigh bells, oozing eggnog, reeking of pine, and threatening festive doom like a cold sore under the mistletoe.

'Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through the tiny community of Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit. It is the hap-hap-happiest time of the year, after all.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed; no, his dog hasn't run away from home. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the seven-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.

But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle," he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Only Christopher Moore, the man who brought you the outrageous lost gospel Lamb and the hysterical fish tale Fluke could have devised a new holiday classic that tugs at the heartstrings and serves up a healthy slice of fruitcake to boot.

Move over, Charles Dickens -- it's Christopher Moore time.

This has some laugh out loud moments, particularly early on. It helps if you've read the other Pine Cove books (Practical Demonkeeping, Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove) because there are some inside jokes with the other townspeople.

This book is truly funny. I read another Christopher Moore book ("Secondhand Souls") but this one is more entertaining. Highly recommended!

Well it looks like I put myself into a new Christmas Tradition with this piece. I will be reading this classic Christopher Moore Christmas tale every year like I used to watch Christmas Vacation in the 90's. Every time I finish a Moore novel I think surely I've read as much as I can take of this guy but every piece is so hilarious and dank in its own unique and hilarious way. I mean how can you go wrong with a pot head sheriff, a truly incompetent blonde messenger from God, a hero with schizophrenia and a DEA pilot with a bat that wears ray bans. Christopher Moore is like a less serious, funnier and way more F'd up version of Tom Robbins. Like if Tom Robbins had manic psychosis and smoked Ketamine off tin foil.

I generally love dark humor, but I just didn't get this.

A holiday must-read for any fan of Christopher Moore, and an annual tradition to read again every year in my house.

Numerous times, I flipped back to some paragraphs to re-read them just to picture the events again then lol (in my mind) again. Wacky and entertaining, it's just a nice book for reading at ease. Some bits of the story are so farfetched, yet, they do link and flow to form a nice, full, fun read.

This book was fantastic!! Story, characters, delivery, humor, & ending were all spectacular. I wish I had read some of the earlier books for more back story but works well as a stand alone.

This was the first book I read by Christopher Moore.. I honestly didn't know what I was in for. This was insanely funny, great characters, and I've been hooked on his writings ever since.
