No book has been the subject of more comment and controversy or has had more influence on our culture and language than the Bible. But how did it become the book we know it to be? In this superbly written history, Jaroslav Pelikan charts its evolution from oral tales via Hebrew texts, Greek, and Latin translations, to its many different forms today, offering a new insight into the history of the last two thousand years. This is an enduring work of scholarship and a fascinating read.

There could be numerous answers to the ownership of what might be called scripture that go back even further than earliest written examples. The various manifestations reflected the cultural realities of the times, much in the way it is said that the victors get to write the history of their wars and peace. This is written by a much respected scholar, but represents an effort to inform a more general readership. In the end, he might persuade many, as his predecessors have done, that somewhere in the unknown accumulation there might be our best chance for enlightenment, even salvation. Hard for me to evaluate; might really be worthy of five stars.
