On the last page of the Caldecott-winning book Jumanji, young Danny Budwing is seen running after his brother, Walter, with a game tucked under his arm. Now after twenty years, Chris Van Allsburg is ready to reveal what happens when Danny and Walter roll the dice. This time the name of the game is Zathura and the battling Budwing boys are in for the ride of their lives.

Zathura unleashes intergalactic challenges that require even the quarreling Budwing brothers to work as a team.

had to read it for a class, it was enjoyable. Not as good as Jumanji

Two brothers, Walter and Danny, struggle to get along when left home alone one evening. But an unusual board games proves to be a portal to another galaxy, and the boys must work together to escape a meteor shower, a bad robot, space pirates, and a black hole. The fast pace of this story will appeal to readers thirsty for adventure. Heavily textured pencil drawings add to the mysterious and exciting atmosphere.

Someone once told me that many franchise movies (“Leprechaun”, e.g.) take their characters into outer space sooner or later. Mr. Van Allsburg has taken a page from their example. Picking up where “Jumanji” left off, he gives us two squabbling brothers who stumble upon—yep, you guessed it. Only this time, instead of rampaging animals, the protagonists have to contend with killer robots, lethal black holes and quirky gravitational forces.

The text is enlivened by the grainy black-and-white illustrations that almost resemble old family photos, heightening the family drama and sibling rivalry. The ending is sweet if a tad predictable. If you really do want to see what happens after the animal stampedes, “Zathura” is an enjoyable diversion.
