FederationBook - 2006
Federation is a civic issue. Before 1901 there was no 'Commonwealth of Australia', but there were six colonies and each colony had it's own Goverment and did things differently. In the 1800's some influential groups began to work for one Federal Government for Australia, these included the Australasian Federation League, Australian Natives' Association, Temperance League and Women's Suffrage League. The big civic question of the time was whether the six colonies should join together, with a single overall Federal Government. It seemed that there would never be an agreement as each colony had issues that they could not all agree on. Finally the Australian people voted on whether to federate and the Federation officially took place on 1 January 1901.
