The author, who died in 2012, recounts his life in Australia, Italy and London up to his move to New York City to become the art critic for Time magazine in 1970. This memoir would have benefited from having an index. Hughes demonstrates his creative and exemplary vocabulary. Unfortunately without the last 42 years of his life, the memoir does not include this two divorces and re-marriages; nor the highlights of 30-years writing and experience in America.
