The Original Australians by Josephine Flood is a fascinating and absorbing account of Aboriginal life from the time of their arrival in Australia 50,000+ years ago to the present day. Sympathetic but objective throughout, Flood emphasizes the role of new diseases in decimating the Aborigines in the post-settlement era, rather than this being a result of any attempt of genocide by the white invaders. Particularly interesting were the accounts of how well-meaning efforts, such as the drive for equal pay and the closing down of mission settlements, had disastrous consequences for the welfare of the Aborigines.

This book should be read with Black War by Clive Turnbill, The Biggest Estate on Earth - How Aborigines Made Australia by Bill Gammage and Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe
