Michael's working-class Catholic family live as though under siege, surviving poverty and violence, as well as his father's drinking and rage. Set against this darkness, Michael is a Huck Finn character, with the Yarra River as his inner-Melbourne Mississippi which he explores with a hunger for adventure and wild, dangerous fun.

These deceptively simple stories give an unflinching and unsentimental glimpse into the poverty, violence, tragedy and dislocation that pervaded the lives of so many families in inner Melbourne in the 1960s. Well worth reading.
