There are threads in our lives. You pull one, and everything else gets affected.

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up their street. One boy got in the car, two did not, and something terrible happened - something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean Devine is a homicide detective. Jimmy Marcus is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave Boyle is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -demons that urge him to do horrific things.

When Jimmy Marcus' daughter is found murdered, Sean Devine is assigned to the case. His personal life unravelling, he must go back into a world he thought he'd left behind to confront not only the violence of the present but the nightmares of his past. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy Marcus, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave Boyle, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood...

While this is, on the surface, a murder mystery, it's really more a story about a group of people and their relationships, past and present. That said, I read it quickly because I wanted to find out what happened.
I really enjoy Lehane's writing style. He does a great job of fleshing out interesting characters and making sure there's at least one or two you can really care about.

I was somewhat disappointed in this novel. There was a lot of hype surrounding it and many good reviews so I suppose I was expecting more. I knew the outcome while not even half way through the story; there was a little bit of an unusual twist to the ending but not a twist that I liked. I am also not a fan of "gangs" so I did not connect to most of the characters. I found them predictable and unlikeable. So I would say this book was just "okay".

I do not like the way he writes. Despite the fact that the movies based on his books, I love. This Boston accent - for me is not very attractive part in his books. This is his second book that I was trying to finish reading. And I couldn't.

Just finished the book today. Really good book. I love the feeling of not knowing what comes next, and how the author keeps you guessing until the end. The ending is not really what I expected though, and somehow feels like a movie that promises a sequel.

Lehane is one of the great crime fiction writers of modern times. I personally don't really like crime stories, but i enjoy how Mystic River is not so much about the crime investigation but about the people involved. Lehane creates these very unique, very real characters and you can pretty much imagine them in real life. You even get to like or hate them like real persons. The novel is definetley worth reading even if you know the movie. I started reading it knowing all along who the muderer was, but it still grabbed me. And I got to realize in which smart way Lehane give the reader hints to the crime; so obvious if you know the solution, but almost invisible if you don't. Great!

This was the first Dennis Lehane novel that I read, and I loved it! I have read one other since ("Moonlight Mile") and intend to read all of his books. A great writer!

This book is a cliff-hanger! great read!
Unfortunately, the ending had a bit of anti-climax to it. Even though, I recommend it to everyone who loves suspense and mystery! Dennis Lehane is superb.
