With the Big Guns

An Australian Artilleryman in the Great War

Book - 2006
Rate this:
At the outbreak of World War I, Ernest Randal Holmes, eldest of seven children, from Kew, Victoria, couldn't enlist in the artillery fast enough. This is his story told through excerpts from diaries but mostly from a vast number of letters he wrote to his parents and six siblings with photos he took on the field and had developed whilst away from it. His journey takes from the Broadmeadows training camp to Egypt, through training in Egypt twice and then to the war zone on Gallipoli and to France on the Western Front. The final chapters deal with the devastating effect on the war upon his family at home.
