Old man MacIver, military historian, recently widowed, has holed up in his holiday home. He makes rules to stop the rot, as he and his house crumble away. Gradually a strange and gripping parallel tale is born, of men in the trenches of the Great War, while MacIver recalls, too, his own experiences in WWII.

Rules for Old Men Waiting, by Peter Pouncey, is one of the most painful literary journeys I've taken. Robert MacIver gives us a monologue of thoughts, wishes and memories. Waiting for his certain death, suffering great pain, grieving, struggling mentally, Robert uses the last ounces of his character and discipline to structure useful days of creativity. This diary of a dying, snowbound elderly man is shot through with wry levity and raw honesty. Opening these pages after a day away required my own discipline, not wanting to let emotional cowardice win over my obligation to see Robert through to his end. Peter Pouncey had that much power over me, the power of a great writer.
