This is a large format book, with copious color plates and many diagrams. It is full of technical terms, but there are sidebars every third or fourth page that help in understanding the material. The author follows the evolutionary history of birds, reviewing proposed ancestors in the chronological order of their discovery, discussing the various theories supporting each candidate, and updating his view of the family tree after each discussion. Some of the discussions are a bit barbed. Each section of the book contains cladograms demonstrating the branches of the family tree(s), in some cases presenting possible variations based on incomplete or currently (2007) lacking information.
If you are interested in the dinosaur/bird connection, and like scientific terms, rather long sentences, and sometimes tortured grammar, this is the book for you.
