A wonderful, whimsical tale of good vs. evil in the witch world. I liked the treatment of the autistic toddler and her monkey totem. The plot line is clear and there is good closure at the end of the story. There are a few 'morals' for parents embedded in the story and some reference to Brothers Grim type fairy tales which challenge the reader to ponder beyond the obvious story of a maleficent intruder into a family with a dangerous secret.
And of course the taste and smells coming from the Chocolatier are tantalizing.
Some how I missed this second book in the Chocolat series and picked up and read Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure before it. Best to read them in order, but this one was not absolutely necessary to understand the characters in Peaches. If there weren't so many great books to be read I'd go back and enjoy them in the proper sequence!
This is a good book. However, it is the same as "The Girl Without a Shadow", just an earlier edition. So, if you read one, do not become excited thinking they are different. They aren't. Unfortunately. I was super excited for another Chocolat book. But nope. Great addicting story!! :)
As a sequel to Chocolat I was surprised at the dark themes and intensity. Very descriptive, I actually felt like I was in Montmarte in Paris. At times I felt genuinely creeped out at Zozie's darker side. Highly recommended.
Wonderful book written in the Joanne Harris style. You can feel and hear the wind, smell the spices and taste the chocolate. One of my favourites.
Simply one of the best books I've read in a while! Full of smells and sounds and images - lots of magic and illusion, imagery and symbolism. Just like good chocolate, you want to savour it, but it's too good to consume slowly.
Sequel to Chocolat, but it would seem the book is quite a bit different from the movie - darker and with more sinister magic. On my 'for later' list.
