London 1792. The Kellaways move from familiar rural Dorset to the tumult of a cramped, unforgiving city. They are leaving behind a terrible loss, a blow that only a completely new life may soften. Against the backdrop of a city jittery over the increasingly bloody French Revolution, a surprising bond forms between Jem, the youngest Kellaway boy, and streetwise Londoner Maggie Butterfield. Their friendship takes a dramatic turn when they become entangled in the life of their neighbour, the printer, poet and radical, William Blake. He is a guiding spirit as Jem and Maggie navigate the unpredictable, exhilarating passage from innocence to experience.

After a tragic loss, the Kellaway family moves from Dorsetshire to Lambeth, on the outskirts of London, where their next door neighbor is none other than printer, poet, and political radical William Blake. As patriarch Thomas Kellaway abandons his furniture business to pursue a career as a set designer for a travelling circus, his children progress from innocence to experience: daughter Maisie attracts the attention of the circus impresario's son, while son Jem befriends a streetwise girl named Maggie. Heavy on atmosphere and detail-rich description, this moving coming-of-age story evokes the sights, sounds, and smells of 1792 London.

"Girl with the pearl earring" author Chevalier takes us to London at the end of the 18th century. William Blake, the English reaction to the French Revolution and the rough-and-tumble life of working people south of the river all play a part here.
