Sallis beautiful-written second Turner novel, a follow-up to his stunning Cypress Grove. Turner, an ex-cop, ex-con tempted back to the Force as a local deputy in a backwater town, faces sudden big crime when a drunk driver is arrested with 200,000 dollars in a gym bag in the trunk of his car. The drunk breaks out of jail late at night, seriously wounding two officers in the process. Turner's investigation leads him to an organised crime connection in Memphis that draws him into a web of escalating violence. Deceptively quiet prose that packs a solid punch.
