"Max McDaniels lives a quiet life in the suburbs of Chicago, until the day he stumbles upon a mysterious Celtic tapestry depicting the mythic Cattle Raid of Cooley. Now many strange people are interested in Max and his tapestry. His discovery will lead him to Rowan Academy, a secret school where great things await- fantastic creatures, rigorous training, and his very own observatory within a mansion by the sea. But dark things are waiting, too. When Max learns that priceless artworks and gifted children are disappearing from around the globe, he finds himself in the crossfire of an ancient struggle between good and evil. To survive, he'll have to rely on a shadowy network of agents and mystics, the genius of his roommate, and the frightening power awakening within him. In his debut novel, author-illustrator Henry H. Neff weaves together fantasy, science fiction, mythology and folklore. The result is a spellbinding tale with an unforgettable cast of characters and an unmatched sense of wonder and suspense."

The beginning is a little boring, but once you read more it is a great book. Harry Potter and Percy Jackson fans will like this

This book was unexepectedly great! I didn't really expect much from the book, but I was surprised to discover an awesome plot after the boring beginning.

Surprised about this story, though I really don't know the reason why. It's enjoyable and the camaraderie between Max and the rest of the students at Rowan Academy amused me (well, some of them).

If you’re a fan of Harry Potter you should check out this book.
It’s about a boy named Max whose life goes from uneventful to exciting when an incident at the Art Institute of Chicago, involving a Celtic tapestry, leads to an invitation to attend the mysterious Rowan Academy. Max learns that the Academy is a boarding school for kids like him with magical abilities. As his abilities improve and surpass those of his peers, Max also learns that there are evil forces, lead by the sinister demon Astorath, who seek to destroy him and others like him.

While comparisons can definitely be made between this book and Harry Potter, The Hound of Rowan does have it’s own distinctive feel and interesting cast of characters. It’s definitely worth a read. The next book in the series is called The Second Siege.
