In 1910, in an alternate London, a penniless young dancer is visited by a cat who communicates with her mind to mind. Though she is certain she must be going mad, she is desperate enough to follow the cat's advice and impersonates a famous Russian ballerina. The cat, it turns out, is actually an Elemental Earth Spirit, and leads her to minor stardom.

Meanwhile, the real Russian ballerina has fallen victim to an evil troll who takes over her body and kills her patrons, drinking their life essences in order to strengthen his powers. And soon, the troll focuses his dark attentions on the young dancer...

This is a cute little yarn, a nice little bit of fluff. It's really an overspun short story, or at best, novella tho.
Lackey is a competent hack, and that's a characterization she wouldn't quarrel with, having admitted as much ["There are worst things than being a hack."]. Agatha Christie once said, "I am the perfect sausage making machine." Their modesty is truly admirable.
She is the female equivalent of the military science-fiction writer, David Weber, flat-footed but with moments of charm.
She makes a better anthology editor: i urge readers to find her Elemental Magic anthologies. This is not exactly the golden age of fantasy but her picks are about as good as it gets.

This book just didn't hold my interest...I found myself skimming through it to get to the end. It was well-written, though.

Another beautifully written book, with wonderful characters from an author I adore. The cat character is so amazingly cat like yet still human enough to identify with.
