***** This is one of the books I will not soon forget and is reflective of our times more than 75 years after World War II. The real friendship between Tally and Karil, those who discount such a friendship between an ordinary girl and a young prince and the bullies on both sides of the war who steal people's souls, held me reading the book, hoping that Karil and Tally realize their friendship is real.

Heart-warming and wonderfully alive book that will quickly find it's way on to your favourites list.

Eva Ibbotson captures the innocence, injustice and triumph of childhood in this WWII story of a young girl sent to a very unusual boarding school.

Not recommended for reading on public transit - may have bawled my eyes out a few times.

I loved this book- all of Eva's books are so amazing- she has this brilliant way of making a historical fiction book almost a fantasy but not.... amazing!

@ happycanada this is my fav Eva Ibbotson book 2. BTW I am following u.

I love this book even though it is actually one of her books in this genre type that hasn't won an award. In my opinion it is actually better then the star of kavan which was boring in comparison.
