Miss Read receives a diary from her wealthy friend and chronicles a year of her life as headmistress in the small village school in Fairacres. Each chapter covers a month in the very predictable country life cycle. Miss Read has her difficulties with Miss Pringle, the school custodian, and Miss Jackson, the new young primary school teacher who wants to only use modern methods. She also fends off a possible romantic attachment and comes to the aid of an impoverished neighbor. This is a book for the reader who likes to learn all about the flora, fauna, and seasonal cycles of a small English village. It's a bit slow-moving for me...although I agree with Miss Read about planting vegetable marrow. Why would you grow them if no one likes them?
