Thessaloniki, 1917. As Dimitri Komninos is born, a fire sweeps through the thriving multicultural city, where Christians, Jews and Moslems live side by side. It is the first of many catastrophic events that will forever change this city, as war, fear and persecution begin to divide its people.

The Thread covers a period of little-known Greek (and, in part, Turkish) history. This multi-generational story is quite interesting, but the writing was uneven.

I loved this book. A family saga set over the generations. A real insight into the politics and life of Greece in 1900s through to the Second
World War and the subsequent Civil War. The story follows the lives of a few central characters, their loves and losses. Those who collaborated with the Germans and those who fought to the death against them.

A great read. Historical details WWII in a Greek city. Interesting characters and good writing. Hated to see it end.
