When gold was discovered in California in 1849, the news spread like wildfire through the country. There were three ways to get to those gold fields and the promise of incredible riches. The first was by ship around Cape Horn, the route taken by Rob Merriman and Clayburn Collins, though not by choice. Fleeing prison and a duel in Charleston, they booked passage on the Inverness to Boston. But the news of gold had reached the crew, and a mutiny changed their course. A second route was by stern-wheeler through the Gulf of Mexico and overland to the Pacific. This route is taken by Trevor Sloan, father of the man Merriman killed in the duel, on his way to even the score. Lisa Sizemore's parents have chosen the third way, overland by wagon train, horse and on foot. When her father sold his inn to seek his fortune, Lisa thought she would never see Clay Collins again. Those who survive their arduous journeys meet in California with unexpected results.
