Or this is what will happen unless the mirror is destroyed. Three people seek the mirror: the first has been sent from the future to shatter its power; the second will protect the mirror at all costs, obsessed with its power; and the third needs the mirror to find a murdered father and save his life. But only one can succeed. The mirror can send you to the past, but it will not bring you back.

In this work of maybe fantasy/maybe science fiction, tons of different storylines converge around a black mirror and a creepy manor house. If you enjoy quick reads or straightforward plots, this is not for you - but if you enjoy very complicated, intertwining, mysterious stories with lots of atmosphere you will love this. From the creepy, fae Wood (yes, capital "W") to the decaying house with the mirror at its black heart, Fisher makes a very interesting world.

"Fans of Incarceron will be thrilled by this 1st book in a spellbinding new trilogy from Catherine Fisher. Determined to avenge his father’s murder, Jake Wilde is shocked to discover that his father is still alive, lost within the perilous time-travel portal created by a mysteriously powerful obsidian mirror. But Jake is not the only one seeking the mirror: fairies, revolutionaries, ghosts from the past, and Replicants from the future all collide in this intricately plotted sci-fi/fantasy fusion with touches of steampunk and dark hints of dystopia. The Obsidian Mirror will leave you “dazzled, captivated, frustrated and desperate for the next installment” (Kirkus Reviews)." "Jake's father disappears while working on mysterious experiments with the obsessive, reclusive Oberon Venn. Jake is convinced Venn has murdered him. But the truth he finds at the snow-bound Wintercombe Abbey is far stranger... The experiments concerned a black mirror, which is a portal to both the past and the future. Venn is not alone in wanting to use its powers. Strangers begin gathering in and around Venn's estate: Sarah - a runaway, who appears out of nowhere and is clearly not what she says, Maskelyne - who claims the mirror was stolen from him in some past century. There are others, a product of the mirror's power to twist time. And a tribe of elemental beings surround this isolated estate, fey, cold, untrustworthy, and filled with hate for humans. But of them all, Jake is hell-bent on using the mirror to get to the truth. Whatever the cost, he must learn what really happened to his father."
