I couldn't watch more than 30 minutes...too long (3hrs), hard to hear & you don't know whose on your side for too long (according to a review below it begins to make sense in part 2). Very poorly done for a BBC production.

A brief summary of the Furst novel. Entertaining but not realistic fiction of pre-war Warsaw and Paris with many of their foreigners. The dreadful future lingers in the mind.

slow moving and a little more political than I like. Also, it is 180 minutes.

It was a very interesting plot, but they destroyed it with the language, taking of Our LORD's name in vain, nudity, and strong sexual content. Not at all recommended.

BOOOOOOOOOOORING! Instead, try Saboteurs (also called The Heavy Water War)

Interesting period war/spy drama when the intelligence agents from various powers, particularly French, Polish, German and Russian, were working to decipher each other right up to the start of WW II in Warsaw. The long set up was an ordinary cloak and dagger affair but more than made up in suspense during the final ~40 minutes.

I really enjoyed this film. I enjoyed the story, it was a bit confusing in the beginning trying to figure out who was who and who's side they were on, but it evened out before the second half. Good acting, interesting plot. Did not feel like a history lesson and I enjoyed the music that went with the scenes. The only thing was I was not keen on the love story, it kind of went on and on. But the spy side of it was excellent.

The most boring spy program i have ever seen to date period. That's very shocking coming from BBC to have such a LAME spy show talking about Hitler a lot,but still BORING as HELL though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyment of this adaptation is limited strictly to the 'look' -- the vintage cars and locomotives, the uniforms and evening dress, the foggy cobbled streets (which appear to have been polished for the occasion), and so on. There are some cameo performances by BBC veterans, but nothing can make up for the hopeless and embarrassing screenplay that obliges the actors to recite Harlequin-esque phrases by the carload. David Tennant is unconvincing, the musical score is bland, and the German villains are straight from central casting. Beware of this turkey!

Great look at Hitler/the Nazis from the view of Europe at the lead-up of WW2. David Tennant is a great actor, as always, and had a great supporting cast.

Jean: I don't know if my country feels I'm any use at all.
Angela: Well, that's because Lessard and half your general staff are with that bunch of fascists
in the Action Francaise. They want France in bed with Germany. Anything that buffers them from the red menace. We have plenty of idiots in England who feel the same way.
Jean: This life we have, this life we love, you take for granted. It could all vanish. Just like that.
Gabrielle: We live every day afraid of tomorrow? That's how we were living. A little less now, thanks to your brother.
Jean: At least be aware of what tomorrow might be. People act as though the worst will never happen.
Jean: The doctor says there's still some shrapnel in my left knee.
A woman: Most men of your generation have scars of some sort. Unless, like my husband, they spent the war at home and got rich. Well, if there's another he'll get even richer.

Max: It doesn't take a genius to guess Herr Hitler's intentions. Know his favourite saying? "The world wants to be deceived, therefore let it be deceived." And he's not wrong. Just read the newspapers.
The final words (SPOILERS BLANKED OUT:)

In September 1939 1½ milion German troops poured into Poland. The Polish (BLANK BLANK BLANK) crossed Romania, passed through Turkey and lebanon and reached Paris in late October.
By the end of the war 800,000 people from Warsaw were dead and 90% of the old city had been laid to waste.
Rosen: They call it a safe house, but to be frank, it does not feel safe.
Angela: You've given no hint that you prey on women of my age.
Jean: Perhaps I don't understand women of any age.
General: Hitler has signed a non-aggression pact with Stalin.
Jean: What?
General: Two men who vilified each other for years. They'd make Machiavelli proud.
