"In 1995, Detectives Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, partners in Louisiana's criminal investigation division, are assigned to a macabre murder by a killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they attempt to uncover the secrets of this bizarre crime, their own lives collide and entwine in unexpected, sometimes catastrophic ways. In 2012, when a similar case leads to an investigation of the original '95 murder by two new detectives, Marty and Rust separately tell the story of the investigation, their lives, and how they've affected each other as detectives, friends and men"--Container.

First: I’m not a big fan of Harrelson or McConaughey. So that’s a turnoff for me. Second: I hate blue ray discs that can’t remember where you left off when you stop play.

I did like the raw drama, the gritty plot, the daunting situations, the scenery and the music. I’ll give it 3 ½ stars for those points.

Best series I've seen since Breaking Bad. Woody Harrelson & Matthew McConaughey were fantastic and I don't usually like the latter's actors work. Brilliant, needed to watch next episode each time until the end.

Brilliant, well-acted and thought provoking. My attempt to slowly savor this show was unsuccessful. Addictive in the best possible way!

This is almost without a doubt the best performance that Harrelson and McConaughey have ever given. A Time To Kill was probably the only other project I thought Matt did as good a job on. It just doesn't see like they get very good material often. True Detective is just a consistently solid, exceptionally well written, directed, and acted series. This is a serial show for anybody who doesn't know, with each episode feeding into the next. I hate the one-off type shows like CSI, Bones, etc, because they rarely ever develop the same character or plot complexity as serial shows like The Killing or True Detective. Unless a viewer were to find the subject matter offensive (this season deals with women & child rape, torture, and murder), it's hard to believe anybody would dislike this series.

This series tends to focus as much on the characters & their own personal dramas as the actual crime the plot centers on. In fact at moments I wanted more focus on the crime(s) and it's effects on the victims & community rather than on the detectives personal lives. I hate to say it, but there we're times where this series felt a bit like it was about Harrelson & McConuaghey being Actors with a definite capital A (seeing that these 2 were executive producers, this makes sense). I'd say if your into drama & like crime shows then this would be for you. But if you like crime shows more than dramas, this series may be a bit lacking but still passable entertainment.

Is this the best show on television, EVER! I'll leave that for you to decide. I, obviously, loved it. Well written, well acted, I suppose its what we expect from an HBO series. But this one is even a cut above the rest.
