Before sunrise (1995): Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy play twentysomethings who meet on a train in Europe, sense a connection, and explore Vienna together. Before sunset (2004): When Jesse and Celine first met in the mid '90s, their few hours together in Vienna were spontaneous and life-altering. Nine years later, lightning strikes twice. I enjoyed this simple story. I loved Ethan Hawke in "Great Expectations" and his performance here was equally enjoyable. The story reminded me of how much I miss the spontaneity of my youth. Renewing a desire to create more of those moments that stay with you forever.

Richard Linklater’s utterly charming feature takes the simplest of premises and turns it into a meditation on life, love, and the million choices which shape our destiny. As Jesse and Céline head towards that first kiss their conversation likewise wades into deepening waters as they compare notes on everything from intimacy and indifference to the politics of life and death. And as the sun sets over Vienna the city transforms into a magical netherworld alive with portents—a fortune teller sees past their palms and into their hearts; a gypsy’s dance puts Céline in mind of creation; an old woman hobbles past like Mother Time herself; and in the background trains and trolleys pass each other going in opposite directions. It’s these subtle visual cues coupled with a disarmingly natural script which couches heavier philosophical musings inside featherweight chatter that makes Linklater’s opus so irresistible. That, plus the voyeuristic glow—simultaneously erotic and melancholy—which comes from watching two handsome strangers drift towards each other knowing that their time together is measured in mere hours. A study in what might have been—or what may be to come for this is but the first instalment of a trilogy—that one can’t help but apply to their own experience. What would my life be like if I had done this instead of that?

One of my favorite movies, I have watched several times over the years and think it still holds up. Each time I watch I notice something new, and as I age I get a different perspective since I started watching as younger than the characters and now I'm older.

The movie is on the borderline between fantasy and reality. It is a realistic move composed of the things we wished we did, the actions we wish we had taken instead of the ones we actually did. The movie has the viewer take a journey to see what would happen if we followed our impulses and had one magical day that we'd never forget.

My first time watching this and I must say, it's adorable! It's flirtatious, thought provoking, fluid in acting and dialog. It felt very natural in acting, and those two actors did a great job!

100% on Rotten tomatoes?! Shocked. Why? This movie was so incredibly boring I had to switch it off.
It has nothing to do with a romance, was too prosaic. Did not like the actors and their acting. The dialog was boring, dull and plain simple. Come on, who would share such awkward conversations lacking big ideas, perhaps kids in the kindergarten?! This was not my cup of tea.
It felt like watching a documentary about someone's daily routine: getting up in the morning just to have a cup of coffee, do his clerk work, have lousy lunch finished with lousier dinner and quick sex with a spouse and do all the boring activities such flushing a toilet between sunrise and sunset. Yes, we do not see this in recent Hollywood movies, but who wants to watch this ordinary boring stuff, if we have it/do it daily, really?
Like the scene at a cemetery when the woman character states standing at the 13 year old girl's grave: "I was 13 years old like this girl, now I'm ten years older - funny". Really? I guess I missed the point. I missed this movie and I'm glad: it would be waste of my time finishing watching it.
I finished watching the new movie "Beast" last night - now, that was a rocket. Hope that gets 100% on Rotten tomatoes along with few Oscars!

The movie is simple, spontaneous and believable. Along with acting, the dialog is real and a major plus. Once felt, it is true entertaining movie. The short scene of face movements in record store is especially touching.

Jesse and Celine meet on a train in Europe, spurred by an instant connection, they spend the night together in Vienna, walking around and talking. A very romantic film, with a restaurant scene in the second half that is just one of the sweetest scenes I've ever seen in a movie.

Every couple of years I get the urge to rewatch this movie. It’s a modern classic. Very leisurely and plotless, but with such realistic conversation and acting that it absorbs you from beginning to end. Definitely more of an “intellectual” movie but I don’t find it snobbish. I love these kinds of conversations! Makes me nostalgic for the time I could spend an entire night wandering around talking about life. Oh, to have that kind of time again. Anyway, this is the first in an excellent series. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s chemistry is nuts!

If you think this movie is boring than go back to batman v superman, you plebs.

Jesse: You know what's the worst thing about somebody breaking up with you? It's when you remember how little you thought about the people you broke up with and you realize that is how little they're thinking of you. You know, you'd like to think you're both in all this pain but they're just like "Hey, I'm glad you're gone".

Celine: No, then it's like some male fantasy. Meet a French girl on the train, fuck her, and never see her again.

Jesse: Sometimes I dream about being a good father and a good husband. And sometimes it feels really close. But then other times it seems silly like it would ruin my whole life. And it's not just a fear of commitment or that I'm incapable of caring or loving because... I can. It's just that, if I'm totally honest with myself I think I'd rather die knowing that I was really good at something. That I had excelled in some way than that I'd just been in a nice, caring relationship.
