The morning it all started, newspaper reporter David Harwood had plenty to worry about. A single parent with no job, forced to return with his young son to the small town of Promise Falls to live with his parents, the future wasn't looking too rosy. So when his mother asked him to look in on his cousin Marla, who was still not quite right after losing her baby, it was almost a relief to put the disaster his own life had become to one side. The relief wouldn't last long. When he gets to Marla's house he's disturbed to find a smear of blood on the front door. He's even more disturbed to find Marla nursing a baby, a baby she claims was delivered to her 'by an angel.' And when, soon after, a woman's body is discovered across town, stabbed to death, with her own baby missing, it looks as if Marla has done something truly terrible. But while the evidence seems overwhelming, David just can't believe that his cousin is a murderer.

One of my favourite authors and although many of his novels are stand alone books, this start of a thrilling trilogy will keep you on the edge of your seat!

This is by far the funnest book I have read in a long time. Just when I'm beginning to think that this small town can't get any weirder something crazier pops up. I have to rack my brain to remember the characters are as I begin reading each chapter and it features a character that was introduced earlier in the story. There are a lot of characters and I find them all fascinating. I'm reading the second in the trilogy and I cannot wait to get into the third. I highly recommend the Promise Falls trilogy.

One of my favorite Canadian authors. Always a great read.

I simply cannot say enough good things about this Canadian author. I love good mystery stories and I am always on the hunt for a new author to enjoy. His books are bad for me because I ignore everything for a good while and stay up too late because I just cannot stop reading. Give him a try, I think you'll enjoy his stories.

I found most of the plot twists predictable but enjoyed the book nevertheless - good story.

I always enjoy Linwood Barclay's books. A friend recommended I try reading his books and I have no regrets. I've enjoyed every one I've read and this book did not disappoint. This is a series, this book being the first. The ending was not completely wrapped up so I 'm looking forward to getting the second in this trilogy.

Broken Promise --- by --- Linwood Barclay.
I remember Barclay from his days as a columnist working for the Toronto Star. Since then he’s put over fifteen novels under his belt. And he sure can write. This story is about a really “weird” situation. An angel leaves a baby on Marla’s doorstep. There’s murder and lots of deceit in this novel. And I dare you to outhink Barclay in this plot. Definitely something to read. Fast.

Perhaps not the best Barclay book I've read, but enjoyed it very much. It leaves the reader a taste for the follow-up "Far From True" and that there won't be a third book to conclude the mysteries in Promise Falls.

After being ultra disappointed with Barclay's last book, I was all ready to give up on him entirely. When a fellow bookworm told me how much she loved this title I decided to trust her and give him another chance. So glad that I did! Despite figuring out one of the twists, I couldn't put this one down. It was a fast-paced read, chock full of twists and turns, with lots of interesting characters. This title actually reminded me of Barclay's earlier titles. I can hardly wait to find out what happens next! (NOTE: this is part of a series so don't expect everything to be wrapped up by the end.)

Linwood Barclay weaves another book web of "not very interesting"
It took me over a week to read this book, since it just was not that thrilling to me.
In the past, I have read many, if not all of Barclay's books, and this by far was the most boring and least interesting of them all.
This will most likely be my last Barclay read.
