In his latest case, Sonchai is paired with young, female inspector Krom. Like him, she's an outsider on the police force, but she is socially savyy and a technological prodigy. In the midst of a typhoon they witness a deadly demonstration of super-human strength from a man who is seemingly controlled by a CIA operative. Could the Americans really have figured out a way to create some sort of super-soldier who is both physically and psychologically enhanced? Are they testing it, or him, on Thai soil? And why is everyone, from the Bangkok police to the international community, so eager to turn a blind eye? The case takes Sonchai to a hidden Cambodian jungle compound for ageing American vets where he discovers exactly how far a government will go to protect its very worst secrets both past and present.

the weakest of the Burdett Thai Detective series. this book was pretty awful. Burdett is apparently tired of writing this series and wanting to move into a more sci-fi near-future spy fiction like the bourne series or something. This was a big let down. But I recommend the earlier novels Bangkok 8, Bangkok Haunts, Godfather of Kathmandu, etc. Until now this was a very enjoyable series.

Disliked this entry in the Sonchai Jitpleecheep mysteries - it devolved into a morass of philosophical & religious gobbledygook about transhumans and what makes each of us human. I found it boring and awful. I could not finish it quickly enough.

Reading a Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep novel by Burdett is akin to savoring the finest brewed coffee, with the aroma filling the air long after the reading. Burdett's grasp of both Thai politics, and global politics and finance makes for a larger than life story, which rolls logically along. [In other words, the joss is extra special!]

I like Sonchai best when he is actually solving murders in Thailand and dealing with the East vs West realities. This is rather far out si-fi and follows in tired footsteps starting with Kiplings' Kim-intensive training to heighten observational skills; Ludlums' Bourne training brainwashing and enhancing to kill; and now the Asset(s) training and enhancing and something else never explained to rule the universe incidentally killing just for the fun of it. Poor Thailand-not the place where I spent so many happy years, if the traffic doesn't kill you a CIA/Ruskie, Chinese monster will. No ending to this book so another will surely follow.

Couldn't put it down! (Not strictly a police procedural but crosses genre into s-f. )
