Boring!

This is a 'based on' version that cherry-picks elements from Flaubert's novel, and it is a film to steer clear of. Mia Wasikowska did a nice job in 'Jane Eyre' but the most generous thing that can be said about her here is that she is miscast. Her lines are delivered as if she were in a high school play: the entire effect is painful. Henry Lloyd-Jones (from 'Indian Summers') underplays Charles Bovary - admittedly, a reasonably strategy - but Paul Giamatti can't seem to capture the village pharmacist Homais, the embodiment of the 'man of progress' that Flaubert detested . Emma's lovers add nothing much; indeed, the only actors in the film are Rhys Ifans as a wonderfully manipulative Lheureux, and Laura Carmichael (of 'Lady Edith' fame), who shines in her cameo role as Emma's housemaid. Apart from the costumes and setting, it would be far better to have another look at Claude Chabrol's 1991 version of the story, which has the incomparable Isabelle Huppert as our bored country housewife. As for this 'update', à éviter.

I like Mia Wasikowska so I decided to check out this version of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. It is the third version of Madame Bovary that I have seen this year, with one version being directed by Claude Chabrol (starring one of the greatest French actresses ever, Isabelle Huppert). All three versions were quite good, suggesting that the novel has so much merit that any decent presentation will hold interest.

yes, when movie makers don't even bother to ask actors to pronounce the name of the main character properly - such a movie is not worth watching.
French names are pronounced with the stress on the last syllable, always the last syllable.
If people don't bother even about such things it is a guarantee that the movie is a trash.

Great cast, well acted, though I must be getting to old for these kind of betrayal and revenge movies to enjoy them. Evil shop keeper lures and deceives gullible, just married young woman, into financial ruin and ultimately death. And then there is the adultery side of it, too sad for me.

Boring. Couldn't finish it. It's not the story that's boring, but the way it was done. It drag for me.

I am sure this version is not the most favorite for everyone as it's meant largely for first time viewers to follow Gustave's 1856 classic tragic story about the destructive path of an attractive bored young wife in pursuit for passion, felicity and rapture in life.

A gorgeous retelling of the classic Flaubert romantic novel shot on location in the original French pastoral countryside near Rouen. Very high production value, with sumptuous costumes, elegant decor, but this version brings nothing new to the story, & Mia Wasikowska's performance verges on tedious. But o what a feast for the eyes!

If you like Americanized dialogue and accents along with contemporary Western makeup from lipstick to everything facial and if you like your authenticity dust and dirt free museum like props then this version is for you.

Emma expressed despair but found the wrong audience:

To maid: I imagined that this would be the happiest time in my life, but the calm here in which we live is not what I dreamt of. One after another, the days come, always the same, bringing nothing. Is this the will of God? Is my future just a dark corridor with a bolted door at the end?

To Le Marquis: Well, I realized that before getting married, I was contemplating my coming life like a child in a theater. Um, sitting there in-in high spirits, and eagerly waiting for the play to begin. It was a blessing in my early youth that I did not know what was really going to happen. When I look back now, it seems that I was like an innocent prisoner, condemned not to death but to life, and as yet unconscious of what the sentence meant. The longer I live, the more clearly I feel that on a whole...Life is a-a disappointment.
