Rated 1/10. Did not like this movie. Quite depressing, with iffy acting.

Excellent depiction of a survivor of a disfuntional abusive manipulative family.
She remains true to herself, even through all the disappointments in her life. She is codependent. She chooses to be the caretaker and thus punching bag for the family. She forfits her own future and dreams, doesn't go to a great school,on a scholarship to care for her mom.

She cares for her dad, and x husband, barely makes ends meet, and finally discovers and creates a mop. She perseveres through betrayal, greed , discouragement and theft... from her family, business partners and uses her brain, skills and tenacity to overcome.

She finds a way to survive and profit from the circumstances and choices of codependency and disfunction.

It is raw and emotional.
Excellent motivation, especially for women and girls who often give up their own dreams to care for others.

Only critical observation is that the character supposed to be Joy, is so demure, silent, quiet and soft spoken. Anyone who has seen the real Joy (just watch hsn) knows she is the opposite. She is passionate, vocal, loud, easily excited, and very demonstrative.

So it is very unlikely that she was so quiet and peaceful her entire life in a house hold of vocal yellers, while being the caretaker for wveryone as well. This is just unbelievable. Other than that the story is very credible.

This is an extremely noisy movie, people screaming at each other all the time. Then there are some very unpleasant characters who insult others and some who are just embarrassing. Gave it about half an hour, then quit.

I made it through about 1/3 of the movie, but turned it off then, as little about it was holding my interest.

Joy "tell(s) the story of an entrepreneurial woman who invented a self-wringing mop, made waves at QVC and HSN, and turned her life around using her enterprising spirit...Joy Mangano, the woman who actually did stand as the films primary inspiration. But Joy isn't just about Mangano; its a combination of her story mixed with the imagination of David O. Russell and his personal relationships with powerful and innovative women. This makes Joy something less than a biopic but more...a version of Manganos truth mixed with the exhaustive spirit of other successful figures." [IMDB]
If you get past the first 30 minutes, of family dynamics, this film gets much better and is an inspiring story of triumph over defeat and empowerment against all odds. Very good acting by Jennifer Lawrence and supporting cast.
Extras include a 20 minute segment of interviews of cast, but mainly the directer and writer, David O Russell, with other film credits of American Hustle (2013), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), I Heart Huckabees (2004), Three Kings (1999), among others.

Started watching this mostly for a Jennifer Lawrence performance and she delivered again. Only part way through I realized it was a bio pic. As a retired business person, I found the movie interesting in its portrayal of the sleazy side of business, especially patents and the risks people take. At times it was a bit confusing, hence 3.5 stars. I'll blame the script.

10 minutes into this and I was bored. Did not like this movie.

A cautionary tale for naive inventors. A dizzying emotional roller coaster.
It's a dramedy, a difficult merging of drama and comedy (like mixing oil and water).
Generally successful here.

Very big lows and highs in this movie. At times I thought I couldn't watch it was so stressful and painful...and then unexpected triumph...ruination and then jubilation. Back and forth. You will become emotionally enraptured by this film. There are few films that attain this level of emotional involvement from the audience. The wicked half-sister and Cinderella relationship between Joy and her half-sister was realistically portrayed. Many people may recognize this ever-present threat of treachery from within one's own family in their own lives. It was an inspirational, touching movie, surprisingly about a woman who invents a mop and tries to make a business selling it. Usually movies are star-studded because the script is weak. This, however, was a very fine film.

Well acted film about a woman who takes acre of everyone around her at the expense of her own self, desires, dreams, etc.

She pushes her true self down for so many years, then finally reclaims that part of herself, through creating an invention.

Faced with constant blame, disaproval, manipulation, guilt (typical dysfuncional family) she pursues her dream, her life vision, it is what drives her and keeps her alive, she refuses to give up.

As she succeeds in business, she mentors and gives back to those with aspirations.

Motivational, inspiring, uplifting story about life, challenges, being true to yourself and not giving up.
