He was once called Orphan X. As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from a children's home, raised and trained as part of a secret government initiative buried so deep that virtually no one knows it exists. But he broke with the programme, choosing instead to vanish off grid and use his formidable skill set to help those unable to protect themselves. One day, though, Evan's luck ran out ...Ambushed, drugged, and spirited away, Evan wakes up in a locked room with no idea where he is or who has captured him. As he tries to piece together what's happened, testing his gilded prison and its highly trained guards for weaknesses, he receives a desperate call for help. With time running out, he will need to out-think, out-manoeuvre, and out-fight an opponent the likes of whom he's never encountered to have any chance of escape. He's got to save himself to protect those whose lives depend on him. Or die trying ...

At first I thought it would be good, but not my type of book.

Admittedly not as good as the first in the series (Orphan X) but still a solid read. The story seems to rely less on nonstop action and a bit more on building the character of Evan Smoak and his struggle between his self-professed duty to those that need help and his own growing desire to lead a "normal" life.
That being said, there still are exciting scenes of Evan attempting to escape from people who have no idea who he is, or what they've gotten themselves into by capturing him. I'm looking forward to a third book, if there is one.

This 2nd Orphan X book was a slower read than the first one. The whole middle section with him trying to escape the chalet seemed to drag on forever. I actually put it aside for a couple of days while I read another book, then went back and forced myself to finish it. The pace picked back up after he left the chalet. The cliffhanger for the 3rd book looks good. I'll look forward to it being better than this one.

I hate to give this five stars, as it was precisely written for TV/Movies, that much is obvious - - but it was still an excellent action/entertainment novel. With state-of-the-art espionage technology! [But for gosh sakes, would the authors have their main action characters doing real exercises once in awhile, and quit it already with the pushups and situps, two of the most useless exercises there. Suggestion: Yoga for staying in overall healthy condition, but also handstand pushups, and variations thereof, improvised weights, balance exercises, other gymnastic exercises, unarmed combat routines, et cetera.]
