Dear Gazelle,

For some time now I have wanted to write a letter to say how much I admire you. You are so graceful and fine. Even when you are running from tigers you are like a ballerina who is running away from tigers.

I think that what I'm trying to say is that I love you.

And so begins an epic, if initially unrequited, love affair between a graceful gazelle and a clumsy, hapless ox. Romance will never be the same.

Adam Rex's hilarious, sweet, and at times heartbreaking letters between a hopelessly romantic ox and a conceited, beautiful gazelle are paired perfectly with Scott Campbell's joyful illustrations to bring you a romance for the ages.

Hilarious story, great illustrations!!!! Gazelle just can't get over herself! One of the laugh out loud responses is "when I said I have faults you were supposed to say I don't" !!! LOL!
The comments below are funny too! Ox is hardly stalking Gazelle, he's writing her fan mail- she chooses to continue responding, even though she has bags and bags of mail, and an assistant that sends out the form letters for her. Ox has definitely gotten under her skin- or why would she keep writing him?

unhealthy relationship; obsession and unwillingness to hear "No"

An interesting, persistent kind of love ... not your usual love story.
One that breaks through everything superficial in a gentle, humble, loving way.
Bravo Ox for your wisdom and bravo Gazelle for your humility.

This book has beautiful illustrations by Scott Campbell which makes the story even more interesting.

Love starts so innocently with a fan letter from Ox to Gazelle. She tries to reject him but Ox is persistent in his letter writing campaign. Cute stories that even an adult will enjoy.

This picture book is hilarious. Not a good choice for storytimes, but a perfect title for those times when your child is not quite old enough to follow a narrative and you need something that makes you laugh and will keep you sane.

This is a funny novel about a persisten ox who sees the best in everyone and isn't afraid to say it - or in this case correspond about it. Ox writes to Gazelle to tell her how much he admires her and she is dismissive of his attention. He is persistent but not aggressive in his correspondance. What makes this book shine is Ox's positive response to Gazelle's disregard.

Ox seems infatuated with Gazelle, and yet he isn't disheartened by her hateful words. He calls her out, but still loves her...finally winning her over. I don't want to teach persistence in communication and affection when told to stop, but since it was never face-to-face, it didn't feel so creepy. My three- and five-year-olds liked it.

I thought this had some really harmful themes. I could get into the superficiality of the "love" on display here, but the most alarming aspect of the story is the fact that the ox continues to contact the gazelle long after she has very explicitly asked him to stop multiple times. This, right here, is how boys grow up to think that they don't need to respect women's boundaries, and girls grow up to think that creepy stalkery behavior is "romantic".

I thought it was a very silly story. There is a lot of tough vocabulary so it didn't quite land on preschoolers the way I had hoped, but still, a very enjoyable read.
